Every year, I set myself a book reading goal. I am a chronic list maker and there is nothing I love more than keeping an ongoing list of books I have read over the past year, unless it’s keeping an even longer list of books in my to be read pile.
Before I had Aidan, I would read hundreds of books every year. I would spend entire weekends doing nothing but lie around and read, read, read. It’s funny how things change when you have kids. Over the years, my reading has ebbed and waned, until four years ago when I set my first goal. I don’t remember how many books were on the list, but I do remember how excited I was to watch it grow.
Last year, I set myself a goal of 52 books. One book a week. Piece.of.cake. I met that goal, stomped all over it, and kept going. This year, I (quite arrogantly) typed in
to my Goodreads Book Challenge goal. 104. 2 books per week. Easy peasy, right? Notsomuch. You see, I forgot that a few things had changed since I set my 52 book goal in 2012.
- My work schedule increased by eleven hours every week
- Rob’s work schedule increased by 34572639478634 hours per week. (That’s only a slight exagerration.)
- Aidan’s homework load increased, as did his anxiety levels.
- Life got more hectic
Last week, I hopped onto Goodreads to add another finished book to my list. There was a nasty little note that said,
“At your current pace you are 32 books (40%) behind schedule.”
Jerk. I had seen that number creeping up slowly over the past few months, but this was unacceptable. I had two choices
- Quit my job and give up housework, cooking, and laundry so I could READ ALL THE BOOKS
- Lower my goal to a more reasonable number
Obviously number one was my first choice, but since I like having a roof over my head and clean underwear, I went with option number two. *SIIIIIIIIIIGH*
My goal is now 75 books. Much more reasonable. Right now, I’m still behind schedule a teeny bit, but it’s giving me something to strive for, a line to cross, a star to reach. I am rejuvenated and ready to read. This Sunday, my plans include nothing but this
